Boston to Gillette: train, drive or stay

Oasis at Gillette Stadium, Foxborough: event train vs driving vs staying at Patriot Place, with trade-offs on traffic, timing, and the trip home.

Oasis Foxborough 2027 at Gillette Stadium

Oasis play Gillette Stadium in Foxborough on Tuesday, August 10, Friday, August 13, and Saturday, August 14, 2027. The shows are marketed as Boston, but the stadium is not in Boston itself. It sits in Foxborough, about 25 miles southwest of downtown Boston, beside the Patriot Place complex. That one fact shapes every travel decision below: there is no city centre stadium walk, and the trip home is part of the night, not an afterthought.

This guide is about choosing between three options: the event train, driving, and staying at Patriot Place. It does not re-list every route or hotel area. For the full route list, see our getting-there guide, and for the full stay list, see our where-to-stay guide.

Start with the question that decides it

Ask one question first: where do you sleep on show night? If the answer is Boston, the event train is the natural first choice, with driving as the fallback. If the answer is Providence, the event train is again worth checking first, since Providence is closer to Foxborough than Boston is. If the answer is Foxborough itself, the whole problem changes, because staying at Patriot Place removes the trip home entirely. Work backwards from the bed, not forwards from the ticket.

Option 1: the event train

For major events at Gillette, the MBTA runs special event trains to Foxboro station, which sits about a quarter of a mile from the stadium. Boston event trains leave from South Station, with stops at Back Bay and Dedham Corporate Center. For select events, Providence trains run too, stopping at Providence, Pawtucket/Central Falls, Attleboro, and Mansfield.

The case for the train is strong. It skips Route 1 traffic in both directions, and the return train is timed to the event, usually leaving about 30 minutes after it ends. Event trains usually arrive about an hour before the event begins, which takes the guesswork out of arrival timing. Round trip event train tickets for concerts are listed at $20, sold only through the mTicket app, and they cannot be refunded or exchanged.

The case against it is uncertainty, and readers should weigh it honestly. Event trains run for select events only, and no Oasis event train schedule has been announced yet. Schedules for these shows are confirmed closer to the date, so the train cannot be booked or relied on today. Tickets are limited and can sell out, and the MBTA itself recommends buying before the day of the event. That creates a planning bind: the train is the best option on the night, but it is the least certain option months in advance.

There is also a trap to avoid. The regular Franklin/Foxboro Line is not the same as an event train. It runs on weekdays only, it is not timed to events, and its last train may leave Foxboro before the show ends. A Tuesday night show on August 10 could tempt a reader onto the regular line; do not plan a return on it without checking the timetable for that night. Regular tickets and passes are not valid on event trains, and event train tickets are not valid on the regular line.

Choose the train if you are staying in Boston or Providence, you are happy to wait for the schedule announcement, and you will buy event train tickets as soon as they appear. Do not choose it as a plan you can lock in today.

Option 2: driving

Most fans drive to Gillette, and driving has one clear advantage: it works on your timetable, not the railway’s. You can arrive early, eat at Patriot Place, and leave when you want. For groups travelling together, or for fans coming from elsewhere in New England rather than from Boston or Providence, driving is often the only practical choice.

The cost is traffic, and it is heavy in both directions. Route 1 is the main approach into the stadium, and it carries the whole crowd. Site guidance for Gillette events warns that lots can take an hour or more to empty, and concert crowds compress the problem because everyone arrives late and leaves together. A drive that takes under an hour on a normal day can stretch well past that on show night, and the wait after the encore is part of the deal.

Parking adds a second decision inside the driving decision. The stadium’s current concert parking information lists free general parking on the opposite side of Route 1, with prepaid parking on the stadium side of Route 1. Prepaid parking guarantees a stadium-side spot regardless of arrival time, but passes are limited. Check the 2027 concert parking details when they are published, since parking rules change by event type. One rule is already worth knowing: overnight parking is not allowed in stadium lots, so driving only works if you have somewhere to sleep that night.

Choose driving if you are travelling as a group, coming from outside Boston and Providence, or you want control over arrival and departure times. Accept the trade: freedom on the way in, a long wait on the way out, and Route 1 traffic as the price of both.

Option 3: staying at Patriot Place

Staying at Patriot Place, or elsewhere in Foxborough within walking distance, is the most expensive option in effort terms, because rooms beside the stadium book up first. It is also the only option that removes the travel problem rather than managing it. There is no post-show traffic, no train to catch, and no surge-priced ride home. After the encore, you walk back.

That advantage is worth more on some nights than others. The Saturday night show on August 14 will draw the biggest weekend crowd, and the post-show exit will be at its worst; a walk home that night is worth the most. The Friday night show on August 13 is close behind. The Tuesday night show on August 10 is the easiest night to travel home from, since weekday crowds thin faster, so paying a premium to stay beside the stadium buys less that night.

The trade-offs are real. Staying in Foxborough means giving up a night in Boston or Providence, with their restaurants, bars, and city atmosphere. For a fan making a single trip for one show, that may feel like a poor exchange. For a fan attending two or three nights, it is a different calculation: the walk home on consecutive nights, without a single Route 1 queue, may be worth more than a city base.

Choose staying at Patriot Place if you are attending more than one night, if you dislike post-show queues, or if you are travelling with anyone for whom a late, crowded trip home would spoil the night. Book early, since these rooms go first.

The decision, night by night

The right choice shifts with the night, so do not pick one option for all three shows without thinking it through:

  • Tuesday, August 10: the event train from Boston or Providence, if it runs, is the easy pick, since the weekday crowd is smaller and the regular line trap matters most this night. Driving is a reasonable fallback.
  • Friday, August 13: the train still wins for Boston and Providence bases, but buy event train tickets early, since Friday demand will be high. Driving means a long exit; staying at Patriot Place starts to look good.
  • Saturday, August 14: this is the night where staying at Patriot Place earns its premium, because the weekend crowd makes both the drive home and the train platform at their busiest. If you stay in Boston, the event train beats driving, since it skips the worst of Route 1.

What not to do

Three mistakes catch fans out at Gillette. First, do not assume the train is confirmed because it ran for other concerts; event trains are scheduled per event, and the Oasis schedule is not announced yet. Second, do not plan a return on the regular weekday line without checking whether its last train leaves before the encore ends. Third, do not rely on a rideshare home as a plan in itself. The stadium has designated rideshare areas, but prices surge and waits run long after a show ends, and that is the worst moment to discover it.

The bottom line

If you stay in Boston or Providence, plan around the event train and watch for its schedule announcement. If you drive, arrive early, sort parking in advance, and accept a slow exit. If you stay at Patriot Place, you pay for rooms early and walk home while everyone else queues. None of the three options is wrong. The wrong choice is the one picked without asking where you sleep, which night you attend, and how much a long trip home matters to you after the encore.
